Surely I have
taught you statutes and judgments, just as the LORD
my God
commanded me, that you
should act according
to them in the
land which you go to possess.

The Departure of the
Apostles, 1845
Charles Gleyre (full name
Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre) (Chevilly,
Vaud
canton,
2 May
1806
-
5 May
1874),
was a
Swiss
artist.
He took over the studio of
Paul
Delaroche in 1843 and taught a number of
younger artists who became prominent, including
Claude
Monet,
Pierre
Auguste Renoir,
Alfred
Sisley and
James
Abbott McNeill Whistler. His father and mother died when he was eight or nine years of
age; and he was brought up by an uncle in
Lyon,
France, who sent him to the industrial school
of that city. Going to Paris in his late teens, he spent four years in intense
artistic study. The following four years Gleyre spent in
meditative inactivity in Italy, where he became acquainted with
Horace
Vernet and
Louis-Leopold Robert; and six years more were
spent wandering in
Greece,
Egypt,
Nubia
and
Syria.
At Cairo he was attacked with
ophthalmia, or inflammation of the eye, and in
Lebanon he was struck down by fever. He
returned to Lyons in shattered health. |

Come For All
Danny Hahlbohm is one of the most recognized contemporary
creators of Christian inspirational art. Born in New York City,
he completed his military service before pursuing a painting
career. As his spiritually iconic artwork began to appear in
galleries and auctions around the world, his reputation grew.
Believed to now be in millions of homes throughout the world,
his body of work also includes nautical scenes, which have a
strong sense of realism, power and emotion, likely inspired by
his own sailing experiences near his home in Florida. |

Paul and Mark
Although Germany’s Renaissance is lesser known than Italy,
Denmark or France, Albrecht Durer is celebrated as the master of
the movement. Born in 1471 in Nuremberg, Durer was a goldsmith’s
apprentice to his father, but he was also an accomplished
printmaker, engraver and theoretician, which sharpened his keen
sense of proportion and realistic detail. His vast body of work
spans nature, figurative, and fantastical religious art, even
including graphic design elements. While traveling, he developed
a love of Italian art, even including elements into his own
work. |

The Light of the World
Hunt's intended middle
name was "Hobman", which he disliked intensely. He chose to call
himself Holman when he discovered that his middle name had been
misspelled this way after a clerical error at his baptism at the
church of
Saint
Mary the Virgin, Ewell.
Though his surname is "Hunt", his fame in later life led to the
inclusion of his middle name as part of his surname, in the
hyphenated form "Holman-Hunt", by which his children were
known.After eventually entering the
Royal
Academy art schools, having initially been
rejected, Hunt rebelled against the influence of its founder
Sir
Joshua Reynolds. He formed the
Pre-Raphaelite movement in 1848, after meeting
the poet and artist
Dante
Gabriel Rossetti. Along with
John
Everett Millais they sought to revitalise art
by emphasising the detailed observation of the natural world in
a spirit of quasi-religious devotion to truth. |
